Making Winthrop Greener: Introducing Your House Resource Efficiency Program Leaders for 2010-2011

By mgram - Posted on 26 September 2010

Angela Primbas of D-entry is super excited to be your Resource Efficiency Program Rep for this year! The Resource Efficiency Program (REP) is aimed at making the houses more sustainable and house life more environmentally friendly. It sponsors many initiatives during the year, which you will hear about via email and signs posted around the house. Angela will usually email Throptalk about these initiatives.

The rest of the Green Team here at the house consists of:

Patricia Levi will be my co-Rep this year, and we both will be planning and working on all REP sponsored projects. We're super excited to have her on board!

Laura Ralston will be the green/sustainability tutor this year, and will also be helping with green projects around the house!

They're here to answer all of your eco-related questions and needs, so if you need light bulbs, are having trouble with heating in your room etc., please send them an email! They can't fix heating/water problems in your room, but they can definitely make sure Mr. Simms and his team are aware of your issue (although it's always good to send Mr. Simms an email as well!).

Finally, and briefly, a few of the first initiatives the Green Team will be working on are:

Reuse Areas: Right outside of the dining hall entrance, there's a bunch of metal shelves with cardboard boxes on them. This is our reuse area, so if you have any electronics, office supplies, clothing or books that you do not want anymore, drop them off at the reuse area! And if you need any of the mentioned items, check the reuse area because you are free to take whatever is in those boxes! The idea is to save students money and to save resources by creating a place where people can discard unwanted items for reuse, instead of in the trash.

Drop Box Signs: The Green Team is printing nice, laminated signs that will allow you to indicate what types of materials/publications you want dropped in your drop box. This is to save paper and save you the annoyance of constantly having your door drop box filled with papers you aren't going to read.

Paint-your-own-mug study break: There will be a paint your own mug study break, tentatively planned for this coming Thursday! Come to the dining hall during brain break and paint a mug for you to keep and use at future brain breaks! Keep an eye out for signs and emails over throptalk with the details.

Thanks -- and let Angela, Patricia and Laura know if you have any questions!
